Huawei will launch its new flagship phones, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro today at an event at Munich, Germany. The Mate 30 and 30 Pro are expected to be the company’s 2019 flagships, building on last year’s Mate 20 and 20 Pro.
The new flagships are expected to have a notched, bezel-less display, with the Mate 30 Pro expected to have 6.71 inch, 90Hz panel. If true, this would be Huawei’s first phone with a high refresh rate display, catching up to others like the Oneplus 7 Pro. They will likely be powered by the company’s new Kirin 990 chipset, which Huawei claims will be faster than competing SOCs from Qualcomm and Samsung, while also providing 5G connectivity. Last year’s Mate 20 started at 6GB RAM and 128 GB of storage, and this will probably be upgraded to 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage for the base models.
The Mate 30 Pro is expected to have 2 40MP cameras, one a regular camera and the other an ultrawide sensor. It could also have a third, 8MP telephoto camera. Additionally, the Mate 30 Pro could have a new, super slow mode video recording featuring that will capture video at up to 7680fps, which would be 8 times higher than the existing 960fps slow mo that Huawei uses.

Today’s launch will be a very crucial one for Huawei, because it is the company’s first launch since the United States barred it from doing business with US-based companies like Google. The new phones could have difficulty selling if they don’t have the Google Play Store and Play Services, which are a crucial component of the Android ecosystem. Google has said that its services will continue to run on existing phones, although it’s uncertain if new launches will have access to Google services.
Huawei has faced increasing difficulties since they got banned, with many US-based companies like Google, ARM, and others announcing that they have ceased working Huawei on new products. Huawei has said that it will keep making new phones with its own software, but investors and analysts are uncertain about whether sales will drop, which is why today’s launch will be an important one.
