Previously, designers built games in the same manner that they did other forms of entertainment, such as movies. The emphasis was on creating a high-quality game and then recovering the expenditures via sales over a certain period of time. With microtransactions, developers may now employ a completely new business model and reap more profits, even though adding the risk of losing some of their core audience.

According to new statistics published by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and The NPD Group, the US video game industry produced a record $36 billion in sales in 2017, an increase of 18% over 2016.

Microtransactions are a huge source of revenue for Fortnite’s owner and operator, Epic Games. Almost all of its income is generated through in-game purchases. Tens of millions of players across the globe enjoy Fortnite, which can be downloaded and played for free.

Research claims Fortnite was the fourth most profitable console game in February 2020. The commercialization happens when the player wants to obtain “costumes” and “skins,” which must be purchased. While users may carry on playing Fortnite for free, the great majority of them pay for these auxiliary items, which produce big bucks for Epic Games. The game also has a novel component dubbed the “Battle Pass,” whereby a quarterly membership costs around $9.50.
