Age of Empires is one of the best games ever created. What makes this game unique is the highly repeatable games. The first game “Age of Empires” released in 1997 more than 20 years ago. The game was an icon. However, maybe the most iconic game of the series was the Age of Empires 2. This game created what we call the golden age of RTS games. Let us take a look at RTS games released around this time. Battle for Middle Earth, Empire Earth, Warcraft, Rise of Nations and countless others. These games were so unique and great. Players did not even need a multiplayer atmosphere. Just like Bioshock. Bioshock 3 is in development also.
In those days players were able to play with a bot and enjoy it. These AI’s were relatively simple but able to perform amazing moves sometimes. Unlike most RTS games Age of Empires 2 was able to thrive on the multiplayer side also. The game was great and easy to set up for LAN games. There were even tournaments. Predecessors of modern Esports tournaments. The Age of Empires 2 played so much by the players. The game got several editions afterwards, also several DLC’s. The original game was released in 1999 however, it still has one of the biggest communities. The game is still a masterpiece.
Therefore this time there is a new version of Age of Empires 2. This time the name is Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition. We believe they wanted to emphasize definitive. Because after 20 years it is hard to upscale a game this much. After this, we have the Age of Empires 4 with an expected release date of 2021. There are many changes in the game. Finally, we can automate tasks. This was highly disturbing for a while now. For example, generally, the fields would be empty because you had to give out tasks every time. There are many little tricks added to the game.
The graphics perform better this time. The visuals do look stunning. Also keep in mind that there are new formations for your soldiers to form and with these graphics, it looks fantastic. Pathfinding is better also. No longer you will need to order them exactly where they need to go from. Now it tries to find the shortest way possible. Also, there are 27 new campaigns in the game. These campaigns have various difficulties as well. Siege’s are harder this time. You will not be able to undertake too many battles at the same time, because they are extremely expensive. There are 10 modes in the skirmish, also the new Empire Wars mode. Also, there are ranks in matchmaking.
Players will enjoy the Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition for sure. The game has enough new additions, but also it is still the Age of Empires 2. The core game mechanics are still there. Players will have to stick with this version until the Age of Empires 4 comes out. The replayability of the game alone will keep you awake at night.
