Marvel’s Wolverine PS5: Release Date, Combat Mechanics, Claws, Madripoor & PS5 Pro Breakdown

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5. It’s the next single-player game from Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man. It’s also Insomniac’s bloodiest superhero game yet: the PlayStation Store lists an ESRB Mature rating for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Drug Reference and Partial Nudity. Reviews went live on September 10. This guide covers the story, setting, combat, PS5 and PS5 Pro graphics modes, editions, and what critics are saying.

Marvel’s Wolverine: Key Takeaways

  • Release date: September 15, 2026, on PS5 (with PS5 Pro enhancements).
  • Price: $69.99 Standard Edition and $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition (US PlayStation Store).
  • Story: Logan rejoins the mutant task force Team X to stop Bolivar Trask, who is kidnapping mutants.
  • Locations: The Canadian wilderness, the streets of Tokyo, and the Hightown and Lowtown districts of Madripoor.
  • Performance: The default Performance mode runs at 60fps with ray tracing on a base PS5. PS5 Pro adds Pro-specific modes.
  • Reviews: Metacritic 78 from 115 critic reviews as of September 11, 2026. That’s positive, but below Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.

Story: Logan, Team X and Bolivar Trask

According to Sony’s official description, Logan thought he was done being Wolverine. Three years after walking out on his team, he rejoins the mutant task force Team X in their darkest hour. Driven by his belief in human superiority, Bolivar Trask is kidnapping mutants, and Wolverine is the one best equipped to stop him. The story also digs into Logan’s forgotten past. Enemies include Trask’s guns-for-hire, the Reavers, as well as classic villains such as Omega Red.

Marvel’s Wolverine is a narrative-driven action-adventure, not an open-world game like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Its story moves between handcrafted locations around the world.

Combat: Claws, Parries, Techniques and Rage

Insomniac built combat around Logan’s adamantium claws. The core is light and heavy attacks, precision parries and evasive dodges. On top of that, you equip swappable Techniques and Adaptations to stalk, ambush or overpower enemies, and fighting aggressively builds Rage for even more brutal attacks. Skill trees unlock new options such as extra combos and blocking with your claws on the move. Cooldown-based special moves, such as a Tornado Spin, can be mapped to the controller.

World Design: Canada, Tokyo and Madripoor

Sony has confirmed three main locations. The frozen Canadian wilderness is Logan’s home turf. The narrow streets of Tokyo reflect Wolverine’s long history with Japan in the comics. The fictional island nation of Madripoor is split between wealthy Hightown and crime-ridden Lowtown. Like Ghost of Yōtei’s Complete Edition, it’s one of PlayStation’s big single-player releases this fall.

Graphics Modes: PS5 and PS5 Pro

For the first time in an Insomniac game, Performance mode is the default. According to the studio (via TechRadar and Push Square), it runs at 60fps with ray tracing enabled on a base PS5, rendering internally between roughly 1080p and 1440p. Fidelity mode targets 30fps at a higher internal resolution, between roughly 1440p and 2160p.

Console Modes Notes
PS5 Performance (default), Fidelity Performance: 60fps with ray tracing. Fidelity: 30fps at a higher resolution.
PS5 Pro Performance Pro, Fidelity Pro, plus an Advanced Ray Tracing option Advanced Ray Tracing improves reflections and lighting at a small frame-rate cost

Reviews: What Critics Are Saying

The review embargo lifted on September 10. As of September 11, Marvel’s Wolverine holds a Metacritic score of 78 from 115 critic reviews. That’s solidly positive, but below Insomniac’s Spider-Man games (Marvel’s Spider-Man scored 87, Miles Morales 85 and Spider-Man 2 90). Push Square’s review called it “the ultimate Wolverine simulator”, but overall the reception is more mixed than many fans expected from the studio. If you loved the Spider-Man games, it’s still a strong bet, but go in with realistic expectations.

Insomniac’s Wolverine joins a packed fall schedule alongside Rockstar’s GTA 6, launching November 19.
