Can You Play PS2 Games on PS5? What Sony Actually Documents

Search this question and you will get confident answers in both directions — “no, PS2 discs do not work”, “yes, but only some games”, “yes, through a subscription”. They cannot all be right, and none of them is Sony.

So here is a different approach: what does Sony itself actually document about running older PlayStation games on a PS5, and what does it pointedly leave out?

Quick answer

  • Sony’s backward compatibility documentation is about PS4 games. That is the whole scope of it.
  • It explicitly rules out PS3 discs — by name, in its limitations section.
  • It never mentions PS2 anywhere on the pages that would cover it.
  • A classics catalog does exist, but access depends on your membership plan.
  • Do not trust a disc-shaped assumption. Check the store listing for the specific game.

What Backward Compatibility Actually Means on PS5

Sony’s own definition is narrower than the phrase suggests: “The PlayStation®5 console is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PlayStation®4 games.”

Note what that sentence is about. Not “older PlayStation games” — PlayStation 4 games, specifically. The scale Sony quotes is a PS4 number too: “The overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles.”

That is the entire remit of the page. One generation back, and no further.

The Detail That Answers the Question

This is the part worth pausing on, because it is what separates a documented answer from a guess.

Sony’s backward compatibility page has a section on limitations, and in it Sony rules out a specific older platform by name: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.”

So Sony does tell you when an older format will not work. It has a place for exactly that information, it uses that place, and it discusses discs repeatedly throughout the page.

And PS2 appears nowhere in it.

Checking Sony’s backward compatibility page, its PlayStation Plus classics catalog page, its game catalog page and its PlayStation Plus support page on 20 September 2026, we found no mention of PS2 or PlayStation 2 on any of them. That is our own dated check of those four pages, not a statement from Sony — an absence cannot be quoted, and we are not going to dress one up as a quote.

What it means in practice is this: the confident claims you will find elsewhere about PS2 discs, PS2 emulation and which PS2 titles are playable are not repeating anything Sony publishes on the pages where that information would belong.

There Is a Classics Catalog — With a Condition

Sony does document a catalog of older games as part of PlayStation Plus, and it is reached from the PlayStation Plus section of your console rather than the store.

The condition attached is the important part: “To download from the PlayStation Plus classics catalog, you need to have the correct membership plan.”

We are deliberately not listing which plan, which games, or how many. Sony does not put that on this page, and a guide that invents those details is worse than one that tells you where to look.

How to Check a Specific Game Properly

Rather than reasoning from the console generation, Sony points you at the listing. On the store, compatibility is marked on the product page itself — “On PlayStation™Store, PS4 games that are not playable on the PS5 console will be marked with” a clear label.

That habit is the practical takeaway from this whole question. The store listing for the exact game you want is authoritative in a way that a general answer — including this one — cannot be.

Why the Search Results Are So Contradictory

Worth naming, because it explains the confusion. The pages ranking for this question are mostly not gaming publications. They include a controller manufacturer, a game-key reseller, an accessory vendor, a site about PS2 BIOS files, and several near-identical auto-generated answer pages — and they disagree with one another about the basic yes or no.

None of them is Sony, and Sony does not appear among them. When the vendor’s own documentation is absent from the results, the loudest answer is not the best-informed one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a PS2 disc work in a PS5?
Sony does not document PS2 disc support anywhere on its backward compatibility page. It does state that PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs, so it is explicit when an older disc format is unsupported.

What does PS5 backward compatibility officially cover?
PS4 games. Sony describes the PS5 as backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PlayStation 4 games, and quotes a PS4 figure.

Is there any way to play older PlayStation games on a PS5?
Sony documents a PlayStation Plus classics catalog, with access depending on your membership plan. It does not specify PS2 on the pages we checked.

How do I check whether a specific game runs on PS5?
Look at the game’s PlayStation Store listing. Sony marks titles that are not playable on PS5 there.

Why do other sites say yes?
Many of the pages answering this question are published by hardware and key sellers rather than by Sony, and they contradict each other. We have quoted only what Sony publishes.
