Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on Friday, October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox app) and — for the first time in more than a decade for the Modern Warfare series — Nintendo Switch 2. Players who digitally pre-order can start the full campaign a week early, on October 16. With the two-weekend beta now behind us and Infinity Ward publishing what it plans to change before launch, this guide pulls together everything officially confirmed so far: the story, the new multiplayer systems, the DMZ extraction mode, every edition and what it actually costs, and which platform makes the most sense for you.

Modern Warfare 4 Release Date and Road to Launch
Activision and Infinity Ward revealed Modern Warfare 4 on May 28, 2026, and pre-orders went live the same day on PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC. Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders followed on August 26 through the Nintendo eShop, and pre-orders for the physical Standard Edition opened at retailers the same day.

| Milestone | Date (2026) | Who gets access |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal and pre-orders (PS5, Xbox, PC) | May 28 | Everyone |
| Beta Early Access (Weekend One) | Aug 21–25 | Pre-orders and Beta Code holders (not on Switch 2) |
| Switch 2 pre-orders open | Aug 26 | Nintendo eShop and retail |
| Open Beta (Weekend Two) | Aug 28 – Sep 1 | Everyone, including Switch 2, no pre-order needed |
| Campaign Early Access | Oct 16 | Digital pre-orders of the Standard or Vault Edition |
| Worldwide launch (Multiplayer, DMZ, Campaign) | Oct 23 | Everyone |

One practical note: the Campaign Early Access perk is tied to digital pre-orders. If you buy a physical copy, you will be playing the story on October 23 with everyone else.
Campaign: A War on the Korean Peninsula
Modern Warfare 4 moves the rebooted series — which began with the 2019 Modern Warfare — into its darkest territory yet. North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of the South, and you play as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier seeing live combat for the first time. What begins as a routine patrol collapses into a desperate fight through falling cities and counteroffensives.
Running in parallel is Captain Price, now described by Infinity Ward as an “operator-turned-outlaw” working outside the system he once served. Price’s hunt for revenge pulls him toward a weapon powerful enough to shift the global balance of power, and his off-book mission eventually collides with the forces behind the invasion. Activision has confirmed the campaign spans:
- Trench warfare on the Korean front line
- Close-quarters combat in New York
- High-speed chases through Paris
- SAS night raids in Mumbai
- City-wide assaults to retake occupied territory
Beta players already got a taste of the Korean front through the mission “Entrenched,” which was playable during Open Beta Weekend. Infinity Ward says the new setting was built “with attention to the culture, history, and military detail of the region” — a notable promise given that the Korean War’s legacy is still very real for families on both sides of the border.
Multiplayer: Ballistic Authority, Kill Block and Two Prestige Paths
If you have spent the last few years in Treyarch’s omnimovement-heavy Black Ops 6 era, Modern Warfare 4 is a deliberate return to grounded, precise gunfights. The headline change is Ballistic Authority, a “weapon-first” technology stack that aligns bullet trajectory, weapon motion, stance, camera, audio and field of view. In plain terms:
- Bloom is gone. Hipfire shots go where the weapon is pointed.
- Recoil, convergence and handling were rebuilt to reflect player input more directly.
- Visibility tuning refines depth of field and visual effects so enemies are easier to read.
- Expanded movement adds more mantling, climbing, hanging and jumping options for flanks and vertical routes.

Maps and modes
The game launches with 12 core 6v6 maps, dedicated Gunfight maps, multiple Big War maps for large-scale vehicle and infantry combat, and Kill Block. Set inside the Westbridge Training Facility, Kill Block is built from modular sections that can form more than 500 layouts, and it reshapes between rounds. At launch it supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight formats — great news if you enjoyed the tight, loadout-swapping duels covered in our Gunfight tips guide.
Six core maps were playable in the beta, and they hint at the campaign’s globe-trotting scope:
| Beta map | Location and style |
|---|---|
| Cachette | A secret hideout next to a French rail terminal; rooftops and tight interiors |
| Lithium | A damaged lithium processing plant in rural Mexico; strong mid-range sightlines |
| Lotus | A battle-scarred Korean fishing village with abandoned tanks |
| Rooftops | The snow-covered roofs of New York’s Hotel Times West |
| Silkworm | A dense South Korean shopping district around a subway entrance |
| Transit 213 | An overgrown Indian bus depot full of close-range lanes |
Two new modes also debuted. Hijack has both teams fight over a single Data Spike and push it toward the enemy Comm Station, where it generates points until it is destroyed. Inflation pays out cash for kills, but the richest players become revealed High Value Targets. Classic modes like Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed and Search and Destroy return — so the fundamentals in our Search and Destroy tips still apply. Ground War returns too, with a 24v24 Combat Outpost mode that plays like large-scale Domination.
Loadouts, Gunny and Apex Attachments
Create-a-Class now bundles your Operator, weapons, Equipment and Killstreaks into a single loadout. Gunsmith attachments are shared across a weapon class, which should cut down the grind we saw in Modern Warfare III’s weapon meta. Two additions stand out:
- Gunny is an optional build assistant that instantly assembles close-, mid- or long-range setups from the attachments you have unlocked. The recommendations were designed by Infinity Ward’s weapons team.
- Apex Attachments unlock when you fully level a weapon. They don’t take up an attachment slot and can change how a gun behaves — for example, the Rezi 12 shotgun’s Apex option enables pump-action cycling with explosive slugs.
Prestige is also split in two. Classic Prestige resets your Create-a-Class unlocks in exchange for faster XP and exclusive rewards. Regular Prestige restarts you at Level 1 without taking your loadouts away.
DMZ: The Hajin Exclusion Zone
DMZ was a beta side-mode in 2022’s Modern Warfare II. In Modern Warfare 4 it becomes a full pillar of the game. You play as a shadow CIA asset deployed into Hajin, an exclusion zone in the tri-border region between Russia and the Korean Peninsula, left behind by the events of the campaign. Your job is to recover abandoned military technology before hostile forces — and rival player squads — get to it.
- Points of interest include an irradiated Fallout reactor (bring a gas mask), a secured Prison complex, the ruins of Hajin City and a heavily defended Military Base.
- Dynamic weather — sudden downpours and dense fog — changes visibility from run to run.
- Story Missions continue the Modern Warfare 4 narrative. Dynamic Operations and Side Ops (repairing trucks, climbing radio towers, finding supply drops) keep each match different.
- The Forward Operating Base is your persistent hub. It includes a 3D Printer for crafting gear, a Stash for storing items between deployments, a Wallet, Gunsmith, Weapon Vendor, Firing Range and a Boss Board for tracking enemy Lieutenants.
- Each Operator has their own backpack, loadout and Trait Tree. That lets you build specialists — a PvP hunter, a looter, or a “cash mule” for vault raids.
Importantly, weapon progression is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, so time spent in either mode levels up the same guns.
Platforms and Performance: Which Version Should You Buy?
PS5 and PS5 Pro
Modern Warfare 4 is built natively for current-generation hardware — this is the first Call of Duty to skip PS4 and Xbox One entirely. That should let Infinity Ward push larger spaces and denser combat. If you are deciding whether a Pro upgrade is worth it for shooters like this, our PS5 Pro vs PS5 comparison breaks down the real-world differences.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox players get Xbox Play Anywhere: one purchase covers both Series X|S and the Xbox app on PC. The catch is that, unlike the last two Call of Duty launches, Modern Warfare 4 is not included with Game Pass at launch, so budget for a full purchase.
PC
Infinity Ward is partnering with Beenox on the PC version. It promises DLSS 4.5 support, multiple upscaling and frame-generation options, and expanded ray tracing (reflections, ambient occlusion, shadows and volumetrics) across all three modes. Activision requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for all PC players, so check your BIOS settings before launch day. Competitive players should also read our guide to reducing Call of Duty latency.
Nintendo Switch 2
The Switch 2 version is being developed natively by Infinity Ward with Digital Legends. It supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro aiming, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, HDR and handheld play, as well as full cross-play and cross-progression with other platforms. Online multiplayer needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Early impressions from the Open Beta, reported by outlets including Nintendo Life and Pocket Tactics, suggest multiplayer targets 60fps with some drops in busy scenes. Infinity Ward has listed “Nintendo Switch 2 performance improvements” as a priority before launch.
Editions, Prices and Pre-Order Bonuses
| Edition | US price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (digital) | $69.99 | Base game, Campaign Early Access on Oct 16 (pre-order), Hunter Killer Operator Skin (pre-order) |
| Standard (physical, consoles only) | Varies by retailer | Base game. Pre-orders at participating retailers came with an Early Access Beta Code; no Campaign Early Access |
| Vault Edition (digital) | $99.99 | Everything above, plus the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, Special Forces Operator Pack, Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ Deployment Bonus |
| Vault Edition Upgrade | $30.00 | Upgrades a Standard copy to Vault |
The Vault Edition extras break down as follows:
- Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix (Price and Valeria include masked and unmasked skins).
- Special Forces Operator Pack: France’s COM SFT, Germany’s KSK Amphibious, South Korean Special Forces and the UK’s SAS, each with a voice pack in their own language.
- Signature Weapon Collection: Blueprints for the Kastov 762, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, Oris 8.6 and a Combat Knife. The four firearms each come with an Apex Attachment available at launch.
- BlackCell (one season): 20 Battle Pass tier skips, 1,100 COD Points, the full Battle Pass and BlackCell-exclusive variants.
Is the Vault Edition worth it?
Here’s the math. If you have owned and played any premium Call of Duty since Modern Warfare (2019) on the same platform account, the 10% Loyalty Discount brings the digital Vault Edition from $99.99 to roughly $89.99. That’s about $20 over Standard. Players who would buy the Season 1 Battle Pass anyway get the pass, 1,100 COD Points and 20 tier skips as part of that $20, and the operators and blueprints on top. If you only play the campaign, or you drop off after a few weeks, the $69.99 Standard Edition is the smarter buy. You can always move up with the $30 Vault upgrade later.
What the Beta Taught Us
This was billed as the biggest Modern Warfare beta ever. It included multiplayer, a campaign mission, Ground War and a first look at Warzone Resurgence on the new Zodiac map — a 44-player arena built around the DRC Advanced Systems drone factory. Infinity Ward pushed extensive changes between the two weekends, including an update to every weapon to slightly increase time-to-kill (TTK) and big changes to spawns.
The studio’s post-beta notes are refreshingly candid. It says it is “not fully satisfied with TTK” and will keep tuning weapons before launch. It still sees spawn problems on certain map and mode combinations, and it is working on Switch 2 performance. On the Warzone side, footstep audio, HUD readability and movement feel are the focus. Warzone will fold in Modern Warfare 4 content and progression from Season 1, and Warzone will stop working on PS4 and Xbox One when Season 1 begins.
Our Verdict: Should You Pre-Order Modern Warfare 4?
On paper, Modern Warfare 4 is the most ambitious package Infinity Ward has shipped since the 2019 reboot. It has a bold new campaign setting, a return to grounded gunplay, and a DMZ with real persistence. The current-gen-only focus and the Switch 2 launch make it the most widely available and most technically focused Call of Duty in years. It could earn a place among the best Call of Duty games of all time — if Infinity Ward follows through on TTK and spawns.
If you mainly want the story, a digital Standard pre-order is the easy recommendation: you get the full campaign a week early for $69.99. Dedicated multiplayer and DMZ grinders who qualify for the Loyalty Discount will get the best value from the Vault Edition. Xbox players who were counting on Game Pass should factor in the full purchase price this year.
