If your PS5 keeps freezing or crashing, the useful first question is not “what is wrong with my console” — it is where did the game come from. Sony publishes two different troubleshooting lists, one for disc games and one for digital downloads, and they do not contain the same steps.
Almost every other page on this topic merges them into a single list and then adds causes Sony never mentions. Here is what Sony actually documents.
Quick answer
- Disc game? Clean the disc, update the game, update the system, then reinstall.
- Digital game? Check the download actually finished before anything else.
- Test your save. A corrupted save is a documented cause.
- One game or many? That single question separates a game fault from a console fault.
- A reset is a last resort — it erases everything on console storage.
If the Game Is on Disc
Sony’s list begins with the least destructive thing possible: “Wipe the disc with a clean, soft cloth.” It sounds trivial, but a disc that reads intermittently produces exactly the symptom people describe as random freezing.
From there the sequence is:
- “Check the affected game is updated to the latest version.”
- “Make sure your system software is the latest version.”
- “Delete the game from your console and reinstall the game from the disc.”
And if it is only ever that one disc, Sony treats it as a media problem rather than a console problem: “If the issue only happens with one disc, please contact the retailer for a replacement.”
If the Game Is Digital
The digital list opens somewhere different, and this is the step most people skip: “Check the game has fully downloaded and installed.”
A game can be playable while still downloading, which is exactly how you end up with something that launches happily and then locks up when it reaches content that never arrived. The console’s own download status screen answers this in a few seconds.
After that, the digital sequence mirrors the disc one: update the game, update the system software, then delete and reinstall.
Test Whether Your Save Is the Problem
This is the most interesting step Sony lists, and almost nobody mentions it: “Play the game from the beginning, without an existing game save, to check if the game save is corrupted.”
It is a genuine diagnostic rather than a fix. If a fresh start runs cleanly and your own save crashes at the same point every time, the console is fine and the save file is damaged — which changes what you do next entirely.
One Game, or All of Them?
This single question is the one worth asking before you do anything drastic. Sony’s own wording: “If you continue to experience issues and they affect more than one game, there might be an issue with your console.”
So: one game misbehaving points at that game, its save, or its install. Several unrelated games misbehaving points at the console. Most of the advice circulating online skips this and jumps straight to drastic remedies.
Before You Reset Anything
A full reset appears in Sony’s list, but with a warning attached that deserves repeating in bold: “Resetting your console erases all data saved on your console storage.”
Back up first, and treat it as the last step rather than the first. Deleting and reinstalling a single game costs you nothing but download time; resetting the console costs you everything on it.
What Sony Does Not Say
Worth stating plainly, because the search results for this problem are full of it. Checking Sony’s game freeze and crash page on 20 September 2026, we found no mention of overheating, dust build-up, degraded thermal paste, rest mode, or a failing SSD as causes of games freezing.
That is our own dated check of that page, not a statement from Sony — an absence cannot be quoted. It does not prove those things never matter. It does mean that when a page confidently tells you your PS5 freezes because of “degraded liquid metal”, it is not repeating anything the manufacturer has published, and you should treat the claim accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my PS5 freeze on only one game?
Sony’s steps point at that game: check it is fully installed and updated, test it without your existing save, then delete and reinstall it.
Does a freeze mean my console is broken?
Not on its own. Sony treats problems affecting more than one game as the signal that the console itself may be at fault.
Will resetting my PS5 fix freezing?
It is in Sony’s list, but it erases everything on console storage. Work through the game-level steps first and back up before you consider it.
My disc game keeps crashing — is the disc faulty?
Possibly. If it only ever happens with that one disc, Sony directs you to the retailer for a replacement.
Is my save file the problem?
It can be. Starting the game from the beginning without your existing save is Sony’s documented way to test that.
